Ankle Sprains
Ankle sprains are caused by a sudden sideways motion or twist that results in a tearing of the ligaments that connect the ankle to the foot. This usually occurs on the outside (lateral aspect) of the ankle and occurs when you go over on your ankle so that the bottom of your foot is rotated towards the middle of your body.
Immediate care should include rest, ice, Biofreeze topical pain relieving gel, Manual Foot Therapy and possibly application of a tensor bandage. If the injury is more serious, a special splint or cast may be required to immobilize the area and prevent further damage.
For complete healing of an ankle sprain, it is critical to properly rehab the ankle. A good combination of strengthening exercises and balance exercise are required. Laser therapy, magnetic bio-stimulation therapy and ultrasound may be used to encourage healing. It is best not to return to your full activity level until your ankle injury is completely healed as this may lead to a longer healing time and permanent damage. Surgery is only required if a complete rupture of the tendon has occurred.
