• Callouses and Corns

Callouses and corns form due to repeated friction and pressure, as the shoe rubs against a bony prominence (bump) on the toe or foot. The body’s natural response to increased pressure is to add more layers of skin to protect the underlying tissues.  This can help to prevent you from getting an open sore or blister.

Callouses develop under a metatarsal head (known as the ball of the foot) and around the heels.  These areas carry the majority of our body weight.

Corns can be caused by a misalignment with the toes called hammer toes or claw toes. Often toes curl under the neighboring toe (especially the smallest toe) causing corns to form.

It is important to have the hard skin removed at this stage to prevent a breakdown of the underlying tissues. You should never attempt to cut the callous off yourself as you may damage healthy skin or cause a serious infection in your foot.

Abnormal foot function and improper shoes can aggravate corns and callouses, making it difficult to walk.  Proper fitting shoes and Custom Foot Orthotics may be required for the best long term results.
