• Stiff Big Toe

A stiff big toe (or Hallux Rigidus) is the result of arthritic changes occurring in the big toe which limits or stops the upwards movement in the toe.  This movement is required for each step we take.  Over time, the cartilage in the joint wears down leading to bone on bone contact.   Walking can become very uncomfortable and the pain may persist long after you have stopped walking.

Hallux Rigidus can be caused by wear and tear or by previous trauma to the area.  The initial treatment may include anti-inflammatory medication, Biofreeze topical pain gel, stiff-soled shoes or rocker soled shoes and custom foot orthotics. If your pain persists, surgery should be considered.
