Dance to MusicDo you love to dance? Doors open at the Royal Canadian Legion in Collingwood at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 5 for a “Night with the Legends.” Come and twist, twirl, and boogie to the old tunes—from Elvis’ “Hound Dog” to Tom Jones’ “She’s a Lady” and more. Maybe your dancing is legendary, too, but if it’s been a while, take it slow—because dancing and foot pain are not ideal partners!

Dancers are prone to several injuries. Common ones occurring in the foot are sesamoiditis, plantar fasciitis, metatarsalgia, and problems with bunions and stiff big toes. The bones in your foot can also be fractured if you land on them wrong. As for your ankle, Achilles tendon problems, ankle sprains, and stress fractures are some of the injuries that can keep you off the dance floor.

How do you prevent painful injuries from ruining your fun? Try these tips from trained dancers. Take time each day to strengthen and condition your leg and foot muscles, and stretch routinely so when it’s time to hit the floor, you’ll be ready. Remember to wear sensible shoes, and if you normally wear orthotics, now is a good time to use them. If you’ll be dancing on a hard surface, you can try some extra cushioning in your shoes. Ease into the activity by warming up with simple steps first before going all out. If you start to feel pain as you’re dancing, stop, take a break, and rest. We know you’re having fun, but if you overdo tonight, you won’t enjoy the painful hobbling around tomorrow!
