It’s a well-known fact that warming up before any vigorous exercise is essential to reduce risk of injury. Beyond that, though, many are unfamiliar with the types of stretches that will help to adequately warm up the body.

There are 2 main types of stretches – static and dynamic. Static stretches are done while the body is relatively still. This type of stretching is what most people are familiar with, and what they have likely been doing most of their lives. Today, however, the trend has shifted to dynamic stretching. For the lower body, this may include things like performing high knee steps and butt kicks, or even running backwards. To warm up the upper body, a series of punch-like hooks and upper cuts will do the trick. These dynamic activities get blood pumping, elevate heart rate and better prepare the muscles for upcoming exercise. If you haven’t already, try to incorporate some dynamic stretching into your next workout and see how you feel!
