You don’t need to go to a professional to relieve foot pain with a massage. Here are some foot massage techniques you can try yourself:

  • Carefully press on every surface of your soles with your thumb. When you find a tender spot, increase the pressure until there is a slight pain, holding it while flexing your feet until it goes away.
  • Rub warm oil or cream all over your feet and ankles and massage them with small, circular motions. Then rub from heel to toes, and from top of ankle to toes, and back again, burrowing between the long bones and tendons a bit.
  • Try the above with a few drops of peppermint in the oil, or rub your feet with a little witch hazel, for a cooling massage. You can also use an ice pack or roll your foot over a frozen can of orange juice or water bottle to soothe pain.

In addition to relieving pain, a foot massage helps relax muscles and joints, improve circulation, and even lower your blood pressure and give your spirits a lift. For more foot pain tips, give Abbott Foot & Ankle Clinic in Collingwood, ON, a call at (705) 444-9929.
