On your mark, get set, walk! The 2013 Walk to Fight Arthritis takes place in Collingwood, ON Sunday, June 9, 2013. Don’t miss the opportunity to join your community in the battle against this crippling disease. The Arthritis Society states that 4.6 million Canadians are faced with its effects each day. Chances are you or someone you love is one of them.
Three types of arthritis can have devastating effects on the feet. The word itself indicates its impact—it means “pain within a joint.” You have probably heard someone describe arthritic pain from an old injury. This is because post-traumatic arthritis may develop in an ankle or foot joint even years afterward. Associated with aging, osteoarthritis is most commonly described as resulting from “wear and tear” of the joints. Finally, rheumatoid arthritis is much different, because it causes the body to attack itself resulting in the destruction of cartilage in the joints.
No matter the type of arthritis, its pain can be disabling. The joints become inflamed and swelling results in limited mobility. While there is not a cure, there are steps that can be taken to reduce the effects of this disease. Custom orthotics, prescription shoes, bracing, and exercises can be helpful in the conservative treatment of arthritis. Surgery is recommended in some cases.
There is hope for a cure, and money raised from the race is used to fund research and programming. Walk either the 1K or 5K course with a team, family members, or on your own. Registration begins at 9:30 AM, and the walk starts at 11:00 AM at Chartwell Georgian Traditions.
