Heel pain is one of those things that everyone thinks happens to someone else. They think they are too young to have heel pain, or they shouldn’t get it because they aren’t athletic, but in reality, heel pain can happen even in children and can strike at any age due to a variety of reasons. You may be at more risk of heel pain than you realize.

Heel Pain Can Strike at Any Age

Obviously those who do a lot of walking, running or are on their feet for hours each day, particularly on hard surfaces such as concrete, are at increased risk for heel pain. That is not to say, however, that you can work at a desk and spend your time in front of the television and guarantee that you will avoid heel pain– quite the opposite, in fact, because if you do that and become overweight, you may find yourself getting heel pain, too. The added weight of pregnancy can also lead to heel pain.

Putting aside all the physical attributes, sometimes outside forces can lead to heel pain. Wearing the wrong shoes, walking in an unnatural way or suffering from certain disorders such as diabetes and arthritis can all result in heel pain. Children can get heel pain due to Sever’s disease.

Heel pain should not be ignored. If you don’t take steps to avoid what caused it and seek treatment, you could end up with more serious problems, such as plantar fasciitis or a heel spur. Pain management is not the same as treatment in this case. Should you experience heel pain, regardless of if you are 8 or 80, come see us at Abbott Foot & Ankle Clinic in Collingwood, ON.
