The Abbott Foot and Ankle Clinic is encouraging all of their patients who are able, to walk or bike to their foot care appointment during July and August. In doing so, you will save $1.00 off the cost of your appointment. For each dollar saved, we donate that amount to the Collingwood Environment Network’s Active and Safe Routes program.

The Active and Safe Routes to School is a program designed to assist school communities in encouraging safe and active travel to and from school. If the current trends continue, we will produce a generation that will not remember walking to school. Vehicle ownership is increasing steadily, resulting in congested roads and increased air pollution.

In general, today’s children are less physically active. According to the Canadian Fitness and Lifestyle Research Institute (1995), two-thirds of Canadian children and youth are not active enough to lay a solid foundation for future health and well being. As many as 60% of youth in Simcoe County are overweight. In fact, nationwide obesity has increased by more than 50% in children aged 6-22 in the past 15 years. This must change!

The benefits of this initiative are clear:

• Increased involvement in physical activities for our youth

• A healthier lifestyle for the entire family

• Less traffic congestion around schools

• Safer and calmer streets and neighborhoods

• Improved air quality and a cleaner environment

The Abbott Foot and Ankle Clinic recognizes the importance of our children and environment. By participating in this program, you will help us provide a cleaner and healthier environment for future generations.
